Marcello Violi: the scrum-half who won as a coach

Quitting playing is one of the hardest things for a rugby player. Marcello Violi did it almost without realising — “in a flash”, he says — and found himself on the other side of the line, on the bench. Today, at 31, he’s the coach who brought the Scudetto to Reggio Emilia. Not bad, for a switch that began almost by chance.

The scrum-half: Calvisano, Zebre and the Azzurri

Before the bench there was the pitch, and at a high level. Violi was an Italy scrum-half, with 21 caps and 3 tries in the Azzurri jersey. In his career he won two Italian titles and an Eccellenza Trophy with Calvisano, before eight seasons at Zebre in the top European club competition.

A real career, in short, but ended in an abrupt and unexpected way. And it’s precisely from that fracture that the coach’s story began.

From the jersey to the bench, without a net

His biggest regret, he admits, is just one: having played his last match without knowing it was the last. And yet that very clean break, experienced “in a flash”, helped him not to suffer a transition that for many of his teammates is a trauma.

The adrenaline coaching gives you is very similar to the player’s.

The responsibilities change, of course: as a player you think of yourself, as a coach you take on something more collective. But the spark, for the “rookie” coach, is the same.

The hardest part: saying no

There’s one moment of the week Violi dreads more than any other: announcing the line-up. It’s the price of the job, the one Pep Guardiola sums up by saying coaching is the best job in the world and at the same time the worst, because every week you have to tell about twenty lads they won’t be able to do the thing they love most: play.

The day I have to announce the line-up is the worst day of the week.

Seeing the disappointment on his players’ faces is the part he regrets most. Although, he acknowledges, more than a real problem it was a self-pressure he piled on himself: the players, for their part, never gave him an argument.

A young coach with a Scudetto already in the cabinet

Having arrived at Valorugby and become head coach between late 2023 and summer 2024, Violi took the team first to the playoffs and then, in 2026, to the big leap: Coppa Italia, first place in the regular season and the Scudetto. A journey rewarded personally too, with the award for best coach in Serie A Elite. For a scrum-half who was playing until recently, it’s the start of a man destined for it.
